Distinguishing Mental And Attributive Clauses: Marked Phase

Halliday & Matthiessen (2014: 275):
As noted above, attributive verbs other than be, namely those of marked phase, occur in ‘attributive’ clauses; e.g. it seems encouraging, you look pleased. These would not occur in this way in a ‘mental’ clause; we could not say you look enjoying (it), it seems delighting (you).
